I use the camera meter for pretty much everything outside. I point the camera at a neutral mid tone such as grass, brickwork, concrete etc and adjust the exposure if it needs it. The important thing is to make sure that the mid tone is in the same light as the subject. Inside I tend to rely on a Pentax digital spotmeter. I meter of a flesh tone, and open up the aperture by a stop."
